Shopping for Your Home Office

So you are converting an old nursery or guest room into a new home office. Before heading out to purchase furniture, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How big is the area? Measure your space. Figure out your room dimensions and how much room you will have for a desk, bookshelf, tables, chairs, etc. There is nothing worse than coming home with a brand new set of furniture that is too big for the room. If you are in a bigger space but it is high trafficked, like a side room, Jarons Furniture offers large vertical hutches which lay completely against the wall with plenty of storage for anything you could need.
  • Do you require a lot of desk space to spread out your work? Bigger desks may bulk up your office and not allow a lot of movement by you or your clients. But having a desk too small may have you spreading your documents all over the floor around you. It’s important to have the size desk that you need to work efficiently.
  • Is a TV in the room going to hinder your ability to focus? Don’t buy a television for your office unless you need one for your job. The point of having a home office is to block out the daily distractions that come with working at home. Don’t allow yourself to do less than your best by adding extras in your office.
  • Do you need a bookshelf or filing cabinets? Some professions require a ton of reading, research and paperwork. Make sure you have the proper storage for your books and important documents. These types of furniture can keep you organized and increase productivity. Also, in smaller rooms, consider making your home office furniture versatile. Doubling filing cabinets as tables or storing them underneath tables saves tons of floor space so you can buy that bigger, more comfortable chair or have extra table lighting that wouldn’t have fit on your desk.
  • Do you have closet space for office supplies? If not, buy a desk with drawers so you can keep paperclips, pens or binder clips in them. Not having all that clutter on your desk gives you more space to spread out your work and you’ll never have them toppling over onto the floor.
  • Are you going to need a printer, copier or other kind of office equipment? Buy an All-In-One. Having one machine do it all requires much less space and confusion. It also only needs one electrical socket, which you may be running low on with a phone, lights and other possible electronics.

It doesn’t matter where your home office is going to be in your house. If you consider these points before shopping you’ll be able to design a fashionable and practical office that will help you work to your fullest potential.
