Review and Repair Your Roof This Fall

Fall is the perfect time to consider repairing or replacing your roof since the muggy  days of summer are a thing of the past, and there’s still time before the first winter snow. If your roof is in disarray come winter, the wind, snow, and ice can cause serious damage to both the exterior of your house and the interior.

Take advantage of the mild weather to first review the condition of your roof. Below are tips on how to do a proper fall roofing assessment:

Remove Debris: Begin your review by clearing away all branches, leaves, and other debris that may be on your roof. These can add unnecessary weight to the roof as well as block proper drainage. If you have trees that hang over your roof, make sure to keep them properly trimmed.

Clear Gutters: Make sure to keep your gutters clean so water can drain off of your roof. Otherwise, you’ll end up with water back-up. Once you’ve removed the debris from your gutters, flush them out using your hose. If you see any small holes, patch them with gutter sealant.

Assess Roof Materials: To protect your house from radiant heat, the experts at SOLEC recommend coating your roof with LO/MIT, a heat barrier paint that is applied under your roof and designed to cool your attic without damaging your shingles and will lower utility costs. If you have shingles on your roof, search for broken, loose, or missing shingles. Make necessary repairs. If the majority of your shingles are damaged beyond repair, then it’s probably time for a new roof.

Your home is one of the biggest investments you’ve made, and protecting it with a proper roof should be a priority. Begin the review process now to ensure your roof will hold up in the winter, and if not, contact a roofing contractor like Power Home Remodeling Group, 2501 Seaport Dr., Chester, PA 19013 at 888.736.6335 for a free estimate.
