Winterizing Your Home

As winter approaches, here are a few tips and tricks to help you save money on your home heating bills:

  • For rarely used exterior doors and out of the way windows, roll up a towel and place it on the interior base of the door or on the windowsill.
  • Buy a Draft Dodger for heavy traffic exterior doors. We like the Draft Stopper from Plow and Hearth because it covers up both sides of the door ($12.95).
  • Install a programmable thermostat to better control interior temperatures when you are sleeping or not home.  For great style and function, check out the Nest ($249 per unit).
  • If you have storm windows, get them out and install them.  If you don’t have enough for all your windows, install them in the rooms you use the most and the windows that get the most wind or breeze.
  • Attic and Basement Insulation can often pay for itself over three seasons of cold winters and hot summers.
  • Get a good pair of Slippers. We like LL Bean Wicked Good Moccasins ($69.00)
  • Consider moving to Florida for the winter 🙂
