Energy-Saving AC Tips

With summer in full swing and the temperatures rising, many families look forward to beating the heat in their air conditioned homes. However, running an air conditioner can run up your utility bills rather quickly. Here are some tips to make sure you’re AC unit is running efficiently.

Clean Debris: Clean around the unit’s housing and make sure there is plenty of clearance around it. Make sure any bushes, plants, or trees are trimmed back to allow several feet of clearance for the air conditioner to function properly.

Replace Dirty Filters: A dirty air filter can slow the circulation of air through your unit. First try cleaning the filter. If this doesn’t improve the efficiency of your air conditioner, replace the filter. Once the filter is replaced you should make it a habit to clean the filter once a month, and schedule a yearly tune-up with a Lansdale Air Conditioning Repair professional to ensure optimum performance.

Open Ventilation Fins: The ventilation fins on your AC unit can easily be bumped and end up closed, which will restrict air flow. If you find fins closed, you can purchase a fin comb to easily open them back up and restore proper air flow.

Shade Your Unit: If your unit does not have shade from a natural source such as trees, you can install a cover in order to block the sun’s rays.  A shaded unit can be up to 10% more efficient.

Don’t Cool an Empty Home: Increase the temperature when you leave the house or at night when the temperature outside drops. You can save up to 9% for every degree you raise the thermostat during hot months.

No need to sweat over expensive bills or having to turn off the A/C to cut down on costs. You can save money simply by keeping up with general maintenance on your A/C unit and checking your home for any air leaks that may be responsible for expensive cooling costs.
