Prepping Your Bedroom For Paint

One of the most common rooms to redecorate in a home is the bedroom, and with the weather beginning to cool down, this time of year is perfect for home improvement projects, especially painting. Before you dive into your painting project, consider these preparatory steps to help you prepare for your bedroom makeover!

  • Remove your belongings. Before you can start setting up to paint; you’ll want to remove any current wall hangings and furniture in your bedroom. Move out large pieces of furniture into a hallway or other room, and cover any remaining pieces of furniture with drop cloths. This will help protect your items from paint splatters or accidental spills.
  • Protect your flooring. Whether you use plastic or canvas, you’re going to want to cover your flooring. Either covering is versatile, light, and inexpensive, and can be found at most paint and hardware stores. To use, lay the covering on the ground making sure to line it up to where the wall meets the floor. To make sure it doesn’t move around during the painting process use tape to secure it to the ground. If you have floor trim that you want covered, tape the plastic to the top of the trim to ensure no paint runs through.
  • Cover your bed. Removing the bed from your room can be difficult and strenuous, especially if you have a large bed with a heavy frame. It may be easier to remove only the mattress and leave the bed frame to cover. No matter what is left in the space, lay the cover over the entirety of the bed and make sure the plastic slightly touches the ground. To secure the covering, simply tape around the bottom perimeter of the bed.
  • Tape around windows and door frames. McHenry County painters recommend using painters tape around light switches, outlets, window trim, and door frames to ensure you’re painting clean lines. Taping will help ensure that your paint job looks neat and help prevent drips from staining these surfaces.
  • Prep the walls. If your walls are covered in wallpaper or chipping paint, you’ll want to strip the walls before you begin painting. Start by soaking the wallpaper with fabric softener. Then, using a dull scraper, start to scrape away the wallpaper, peeling when you can. Allow the wall to dry, then sand down any bumps or scratches. Once you’ve prepped the surface, make sure that the walls are clear of dust and debris so that the paint will adhere and dry properly.

Completing this prep-work before you start painting will make completing your new bedroom a simpler process.
