Organizing Your Laundry Room

The laundry room – a mecca of lonely socks, cleaning supplies, drying clothes and even some of your pets belongings. With people passing through constantly and carelessly throwing things around in there, it’s easy for the room to become somewhat of a mess, but it doesn’t have to stay that way! There are several simple solutions you can employ to organize your laundry room once and for all.

Pre-sort your laundry. Get a different laundry bin for each cycle of wash you do – lights, darks, whites, and delicates. Have your family members place their dirty clothes in the correct bin to save time pre-sorting it yourself. If each family member isn’t doing their own laundry as is, it would be nice for them to lend a hand by following this simple task.

Organize your cleaning supplies. Detergents, fabric softeners, stain removers, and dryer sheets are just a few of the supplies you’ll need in order to do the wash properly. If they aren’t all contained in one spot, they could wind up everywhere. There a couple different ways you can organize them. Get a basket you can place on a shelf or on top of the dryer that holds all the supplies you have, or use a slim cart with shelves to stow things and wheels so that you can slide into a small space when it’s not being used. Or, if you have the space, you can create a shelving unit above the washer/dryer where you can place the supplies and even some of the laundry baskets.

Create a space for all of the loose articles of clothes or change. No one can solve the mystery of where the matching sock disappears to, but to prevent future losses, use a basket to place all of the mismatched socks and other rogue articles of clothing into. If you keep your seasonal clothing in the laundry room (hats, gloves), use extra  baskets to keep these items contained. As for all of the loose change in the dryer, hang up a change jar in the laundry room and cash it in when it gets filled.

Make space to dry and iron your clothes. For items that can’t go in the dryer, invest in a drying rack. If you don’t have the space to keep one on the floor, think about hanging one on the back of the laundry room door. You can also get a retractable clothing line that only needs to be out when in use. Get your ironing board off the floor and hang it up on two hooks. If you don’t have the space for a full ironing board, make your own or invest in a small board you can place on top of the dryer.

Designate a spot for your pet. Is your laundry room also the home of your cat’s litter box or your dog’s food? Whatever wall is furthest away from your washer/dryer should be the spot where you place these items. That way, no one is tripping over their bowls and your pet will know exactly where to go to do their business.

Once everything is organized, you’ll be able to use your laundry room to its full potential! More importantly, the room won’t look like a cluttered mess. Find a new peace of mind with an organized laundry room from Missouri City, TX interior decorator Peggy Herrick.
