Winter Home Improvement Projects

The weather outside is frightful during the winter. This time of year, homeowners tend to be most lethargic when it comes to home improvements. However, winter is the perfect time to work on home improvement projects!  Not only do these types of projects keep you active, they also add value to your home. Since it’s too cold to work outside, tackle indoor projects to improve the look and value of the home.

Give the walls some pizzazz. Spruce up the wall color in your home with a fresh coat of paint. Often, ceilings are left out of the home improvement process. Take a look at your ceilings to see if they require a fresh coat of paint or some touching up. A professional can help you determine how much work your ceiling needs. Having a properly painted ceiling will compliment the colors you’ve chosen for the walls and unite the design of a room. Decorative crown molding or trim will also liven up your living space and add value to your home.

Out with the old, in with the new!  Replacing old doors with new ones adds a lot of value to your home. If your interior doors do not sit well in the door frame or drag along your flooring, they should be replaced. Older, hollow doors are vulnerable to holes and scratches from everyday use. Installing new doors, whether they are solid wood or a durable synthetic, will improve the overall value of the home. Door trim should be replaced at the same time to ensure the new doors will fit properly and look right with the new doors.

Fix up the bathroom. Does your bathroom need a little work? Replacing the sink and faucet fixtures can be an easy way to update the look of the bathroom without being too time-consuming or breaking the bank.  Donna McClellan, a Woodbridge, VA interior decorator, tells her clients that chrome, brushed nickel or bronze faucets and knobs can create an eye-popping difference. Check to make sure nothing is leaking – frozen pipes can be disastrous! If you do run into a problem with your plumbing, contact a professional plumbing service immediately.

Update your flooring.  Aside from painting, replacing the flooring always creates a dramatic difference in a home and helps increase its value. If the old linoleum flooring in your kitchen is looking a little worse for wear, install durable tiling that is easier to clean and will last much longer. Varieties of hardwoods are endless and always a good investment. Try sustainable bamboo flooring for the entryway to your home or add eye-catching oak flooring in your dining room for a look of durable luxury.

Instead of simply nesting indoors during the winter months, update and renovate! When the warmer months come around, you can spend time outdoors and enjoying the benefits of a house that looks great and has increased value.
