Dressing Up Your Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving is almost here! Is your dining room table ready? You probably have your menu prepped, the fine china ready, and your silverware shined, but what about your dining room table? Table runners are a great way to add texture or color to your Thanksgiving spread this year. Jennifer Jones, an interior designer in Conroe, TX shares a few simple and creative table runner ideas for your Thanksgiving table.

  • Double up. Use two separate runners to create a unique look for your dining room table. The bottom runner should extend over each end of the table. Choose a runner that hangs about six inches off the edge of the table and is made of a sheer material. The top table runner should be shorter than the length of the table and should be a solid color to create an accent. Similarly, you can criss-cross two runners, one placed horizontally and one placed vertically across your dining room table to create a unique look. Make sure the two runners complement each other – try using a solid color runner mixed with a printed runner.
  • Change direction. Place your table runners vertically on your dining room table instead of horizontally along the length of the table. This will create a unique look and also offer the functionality of placemats.
  • Incorporate runners with other linens. Adding a table runner on top of a tablecloth can add a touch of elegance to any traditional dining room table. Choose a table linen that evokes a sense of the season, like burlap. This will draw attention to the dining room table and create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
  • Brighten up! If your dining room has a traditional look with muted or neutral colors, adding a runner to your dining room table is a great way to add a pop of color. Get even more playful and feature a runner with a pattern or vibrant color scheme to add color to a dining room.

Once you’ve added a runner or two, don’t forget to incorporate a centerpiece! This will tie your holiday table together. If you’re feeling extra festive, you can also add place cards for your guests or a little party favor. Regardless of how you celebrate, ensure your holiday table is welcoming this season by adding a table runner.
