Summer Storage Tips

When your house is a mess and everything feels cluttered, you might not be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the summer. Don’t let another day go by with everything out of sorts. Get organized now with these simple storage tips:

  • Remove all of your winter garments from your closet. Wash your clothes before packing them away to prevent damage and keep moths and other insects away. Surface stains can also lead to damaged clothing if they are left over time. Fold garments like sweatshirts and use hangers for clothes you want to protect.
  • Store in a dry, dark, cool place. Store items in an air-conditioned area. Wet and warm environments are a breeding ground for insects and mold, so be sure your space is not damp or susceptible to water leakage. Never use plastic bags or airtight containers to store clothes. Lack of ventilation allows moisture to collect over time which causes mildew. Allow some breathing room in boxes and storage bins.
  • Stack smart and maximize your space. Pack heavier items at the bottom of your storage space and lighter items on top. This will make items easier to access when the time comes to pull them out of storage.
  • Label boxes and storage bins clearly. Labeling makes it easy for you to identify what items are stored where. By taking the time and detailing everything thoroughly now, you will save yourself a lot of time and trouble later.
  • Utilize drop cloths. Don’t put your delicate items at risk. Drop cloths provide a secure covering for furniture and any other items that require coverage and extra protection.

When you’re choosing containers to store your items in, think about the ways you can incorporate them into the decor of your home. For example, a large ottoman with storage underneath for winter throw blankets may add warmth to your living room. Baskets for sweaters or jeans can add character to your bedroom. There are plenty of stylish storage options out there that can speak to your personality and the aesthetic of all of your other home decor.
