How to Choose the Best Decor for a New Home

Nothing feels quite as good as moving into a new home. A fresh start is always invigorating, whether you’re a first-time homeowner or someone moving into a new neighborhood. New houses are like a blank canvas that can be transformed into the home of your dreams. Here are a few tips and tricks from Bucks County interior designer Black-eyed Susan to help you choose the best decor for your new home.

Consider what you have. Before you even move, consider the things you’re going to bring with you. Are there pieces of furniture, window treatments, or accessories you can part with? Think about how your current furniture will flow in the new space. Do you still love the ornamental desk lamp you have in your office? Donate anything that isn’t going to go with the vibe of your new home. Doing so will prevent you from forming piles of clutter throughout your fresh start!

Focus on your bedroom. Whether you’re bringing old furniture or investing in new pieces, you should focus on decorating your bedroom first. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time in there, so you want it to be comfortable. If flooring upgrades are necessary, have those handled, then have your bedroom set moved or delivered as early as possible. Install window treatments so that you’re able to get a good night of sleep the first night in your new home. If you’re working on a budget, invest in quality bedding and pillow upgrades. Doing so will allow you to feel like you’ve got a new bedroom set, but with a much lower ticket price.

Resist the urge to buy sets. If you’ve been in a home store recently, you’ve probably noticed everything in a layout was carefully selected to match perfectly. Stores do this in the hopes that you’ll buy everything you see! If you’re looking to a retail store for inspiration, consider your personal style as well. When you find furniture or accessories that speak to you, buy them because you like them, and you feel confident that they’ll go with the vibe of your home — not because they match the set at the store.

Prioritize painting and decorating. Let’s face it — moving is a chore. When you move into your new home, it might feel like a good idea to get everything you own into the house and put away as quickly as you can, but you shouldn’t do this! Putting off decorating often means forever. Instead, consider the way you want your house to look and tackle it head-on. Painting and decorating should take precedence to finding a home for all of your belongings. Start room by room, painting, re-flooring, and accessorizing as you want. Then, arrange furniture and find homes for your personal effects.

Moving into a new home is one of life’s most exciting experiences, but it can also be one of the most overwhelming. Once you’ve made settlement and arranged your move, start thinking about how you want your home to look and feel. Ensure your new home becomes everything you had hoped for with these decorating tips and tricks.
