6 Pieces of Decor Your Home is Missing

Long after you’ve completed the arduous process of decorating your home, something can still feel off. Professionals on television make interior decorating seem so effortless and like the room comes together in moments. Yet, for the rest of us, it can be a struggle to get it right. If your home feels like it is lacking something, it may be a decor misstep. Here are six pieces of decor your home might be missing.

  1. Proper curtains
The absence of curtains in any room can make a place feel unfinished. While curtains certainly frame a window, they also help to ground and frame your entire room. If the room in question feels cold and unwelcoming, consider adding long curtains. Full, thick drapes add warmth and make the space cozier. If lighting is a concern, thin and airy curtains can provide visual interest without blocking incoming sunlight.
  2. Right size rug
If your room feels empty, it could be that you’re missing an area rug. These design fixtures help soften a room and add texture. Don’t forget to consider the size of the room when you’re selecting your area rug. According to an interior designer in Dallas, choosing a rug in the wrong size will make the room feel unbalanced. To pull everything together, place all of your furniture on (or partially on) the area rug.
  3. Tables and benches
Having a space full of couches and chairs without side tables can leave your room feeling incomplete. Not only can you use side tables to display decor, but they fill out the space and provide a sense of balance to larger pieces of furniture, such as a sectional. Additionally, benches can perform double-duty since they provide additional seating and storage.
  4. Colors that compliment
While refinishing a room, it is tempting to stick with a neutral color palette to avoid clashes. However, a neutral background can often detract from your decor rather than enhance it, especially if the undertones of your walls and decor do not match. But don’t let this deter you from adding color to your walls. Instead, focus on making sure everything is cohesive. Think of the pieces you have: if they have gold undertones, a slate gray paint job won’t do much to complement them. However, warm colors like red and orange and earth tones like green and brown will fit in perfectly.
  5. Layered lighting
Proper lighting is an often overlooked but essential part of decorating. If your room has one single overhead light fixture, it may feel dark and enclosed. To bring warmth to the space, place stylish lamps on side tables, especially in the corner where you read. Make sure you spread the lighting around your space, so the entire room benefits from the added fixtures.
  6. Playful plants
Adding plants to your home may be the missing piece of your decor puzzle. After all, the beauty of plants lies in the versatility. If your space is more neutral, use a brightly patterned pot to add color. If you want the plant to shine, consider placing it something more subdued. Hanging plants can add visual interest in a room with high ceilings, while plants on a bookshelf can add texture to an otherwise monotonous display.

Sometimes, a room is missing one little thing that can transform the space and make it feel whole. Take inventory of your space and see if any of the items above are the missing link for your home.
