How to Decorate Your Porch for Fall

Autumn brings cooler weather, vibrant colors, and the inspiration to decorate according to the shift in seasons. While the inside of your home may be sporting warm throw blankets and flickering candles, your exterior may lack seasonal flair. Bring the fall décor outside and decorate your porch for the season.

Read on to discover five tips for decorating your porch for fall.

Get a variety of gourds

Nothing says fall like a pumpkin spice latte, but don’t just relegate gourds to your morning coffee order. Pumpkins and squash make excellent décor pieces, and they are great options on a budget. Stack a few pumpkins of different sizes at your front door, and fill in any empty gaps with more miniature pumpkins and gourds for a cornucopia look. You can also paint your pumpkins different colors for a fun twist that better matches the outside of your home.

Create a cozy nook

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you can no longer enjoy sitting outside. Create a small nook where you can curl up with a cup of coffee or a book while enjoying the loveliness of fall. Wicker chairs are a great option, as they are weather-resistant, and you can choose your own cushions. A Prospect, KY, interior decorator recommends adding a few decorative pillows with patterns such as plaid or colors like orange, yellow, and burgundy. If you have a side table, consider adding a pumpkin or lantern for a festive touch.

Hang a seasonal wreath

Wreaths often evoke tidings of comfort and joy, but they aren’t just for the winter season. Fall wreaths are a great way to add extra flair to your outdoor area and welcome guests into your home. Many stores sell seasonal wreaths, but they are also easy to DIY with a quick trip to the craft store. You can use fake fall foliage, leaves, and pine cones to create your wreath. Corn also works well here; you can use stalks of the colorful variety, called flint corn, to form something beautiful and unique.

Freshen up with flowers

Autumn is known for its explosion of colors, and a great way to incorporate the fall beauty is through annual flowers. Chrysanthemums are a great option, and they come in a variety of colors, such as red, orange, yellow, and white. Or, consider marigolds, which come in vibrant warm colors and are known as the birth flower for October. This connection to the season makes them especially fitting for fall décor. Plant a few in your front yard or pot them in a window box for a lovely fall display.

Stack your display

A barrel of hay won’t cost you much and can provide the perfect base for other décor pieces. You can add a few pumpkins, a scarecrow, or a skeleton to the top to greet guests. Also consider adding a few potted fall flowers. If you have stairs leading up to your door, you can place different décor items on each step for a similarly staggered look, such as pumpkins and gourds or potted flowers.

If you don’t have trees and flowers surrounding your house naturally, use fall décor to get your exterior up to date. We hope the tips above inspire you to decorate your porch for the fall season!
